SCBWI South Africa has had a number of highpoints in the last eight months.I shall deal with two.
Korky Paul of Winnie the Witch fame presented an exhilarating Retreat in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village in the Cape as well as in Gauteng. It was a rare opportunity for South African illustrators to have intensive, high-level professional development.
Over the three days, Korky covered the process of illustrating a picture book from creating a dummy to drawing the roughs for a double page spread to producing the finished art. Participants worked step by step, from the first stage of deciding on the text for each of the twelve spreads. Korky used digital slides to illustrate each stage and offered individual guidance during every stage.
In May this year (2019), Cape members had a marvellous opportunity to hear Alvina Ling VP and Editor-in Chief Little, Brown give two talks on publishing in the USA. These carefully prepared and entertaining talks covered a comprehensive range aspects such as what publishers are looking for, how to know when the manuscript is ready, the publishing process. Alvin was generous in answering questions and allowed all of the participants to submit manuscripts/portfolios for two months after the talk.
